The name is Siyabonga Gcabashe, born in Durban (Kwamashu), grew up in Umlazi a ghetto location on the South of Durban& now is currently situated in Pietermaritzburg, Kwazulu Natal, South Africa. He Started collecting records/ music in the
early 2000's...well year 2000 to be specific. The 1st record ever that he had the privilege to own is Dead Prez's - Lets
Get Free album. It was an album that he was introduced to by his cousin, who was very musically driven by Kwaito & Hip Hop music.
Even though like any other kid that grew up in the early 90's, he was influenced by kwiato too, but he describes the Dead Prez
record as an album that "made things official between music & him". As years went by he slowly got introduced to other genres
of music, & this was possible because he believes that one genre in one way or another, interlinks with other genres.
Take for instance Hip Hop music, there’s so much sampling done in the genre that sometimes we happen to bump into an original
Version of the sampled song & it may be a song of the past, of another genre...just like how Hip Hop producer NO I.D has been
chopping (sampling) Soul & Jazz records for years now. In 2008 Ceeya started making beats & slowly got drawn into music production.
2 years later, early 2010 he along with his friends formed a producer collective called Ocean Deep, which is House music orientated
production crew. He had the privilege of working with a lot of local & international producers/ artists/ musicians & labels including the likes of
Rocco, Distant People, Mmelashon, The Antidotes...to name a few. Late 2013 Ceeya decided to part ways with Ocean Deep.
His now just a music enthusiast, who likes collecting & analysing, records/ music. His music collection varies & is very broad, his the type of
cat that goes from listening to Sun Ra, Miles Davis, Missus Beastly - to listening to Blink 182, Korn, Mumford & Sons, Civil Twilight...
from Raekwon The Chef, Wu Tang Clan, Madlib, J Dilla, Blu & Exile - To Glady's Knight & The Pips, Marvin Gaye, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes...
from Soul Brothers, Mahlathini & The Mahotella Queens, Freddie Gwala - To Johnny Dyani, Zim Ngqawana, Winston Mankunku Ngozi ...his just a
collector who likes exploring on different sounds & learning more about different types of music…he reckons that’s what “crate digging” is about.
